Here is some information that is good to know before you purchase your new XR FLEXVOLT 54V battery.
The XR FLEXVOLT battery is a 54v,108 Watt hour (Wh) battery. This means it would usually be shipped in the Class 9 Dangerous Goods category - which would make it very expensive to transport. However - this is the clever bit - DeWalt has designed these 54v batteries with this in mind and developed a patented system which switches a 54v, 108Wh battery into the equivalent of 3x 18v, 36Wh batteries - a bit like taping 3x 2.0Ah batteries together, meaning these three batteries can be transported safely and outside of the Class 9 Dangerous Goods classification. Attaching one of these batteries to your 18vXR tool has the same effect, giving you 6.0Ah and extended runtime - pretty smart huh?To achieve this, DeWalt has included an innovative transport cap with every battery. How does the cap do it? Well, when you slide the cap onto the battery, it acts as the switch and separates the strings of cells inside so that one battery pack assembly can be classed as three battery packs during transportation. If the transport cap isn’t used during transportation, you guessed it - 108Wh and back over the 100Wh threshold. it might look like your usual battery cover - but it doesn't just protect your battery's connections.

All deliveries of XR FLEXVOLT batteries from DEWALT will include the battery transport cap, which is also available as a service part (N462141).

If you need to transport a FLEXVOLT battery, you'll need to slide on the transport cap as it's the sender's responsibility to correctly ship Lithium-Ion batteries according to dangerous goods transportation regulations and freight rules, not forgetting that failure to do so may result in fines. So don’t throw them away!(An infographic version of this information can be found here.)How do I remove the travel cap? We've had a couple of questions from customers asking - what is the best way to remove the travel cap from the battery safely and effectively? There's definitely a method to this, so make sure you're not forcing the cap off, as this could damage the battery itself. The best way to remove the travel cap from your XR Flexvolt 54v battery is to make sure you are pressing down on the yellow button at the head of the battery that you would normally press to release it from a tool. Once this is pressed, the travel cap should slide off comfortably - and remember to keep it!
