In 2014, Makita launched their new DHP481 flagship cordless, high torque hammer drill, overtaking many other types of high torque hammer drills with an enviable Hard Application Max torque of 115-130 Nm.
Now in 2021, Makita have seemingly announced the launch of the DHP486 18v LXT combi hammer drill and DDF486 drill driver in some countries. Stats for both the combi drill and drill driver are the same, including RPM range (0 – 2,100rpm), lock torque (125Nm 130Nm), size (178 x 81 x 248mm) and majority of features. The new DHP486 combi drills will eventually replace the DHP481Z and DHP481RTJ, which of course were previously considered the best in the range.

It’s the tool that Makita lovers have been crying out for, and it might be arriving in the UK very soon - get ready for the DMR300 & DMR301 cordless Bluetooth Makita radio chargers and speakers!
Soon to be launched elsewhere in the world, these products will allow Makita lovers in the UK to play music through their job site speaker AND charge their 18v LXT or 10.8v/12v Max CXT batteries at the same time, by inserting the battery cartridge into the radio and powering it by plugging the AC power adaptor into the mains.
The on-screen battery capacity indicator lets you know how much the battery is charged, lighting up fully when it has reached maximum capacity. You can then use the battery it has charged to power another tool, reducing downtime and the need for additional plug sockets for conventional chargers - or make your radio more portable and versatile by unplugging from the mains and moving around the job site as needed.
There are two models of the radio

Makita have launched the 40V max XGT™, a new standalone cordless system in 2020. 40V Max XGT is engineered for select higher-demand applications and although the 40V max XGT batteries look similar in size to 18V LXT batteries, XGT is a completely new system with its own tools, equipment, batteries, and chargers. BEST SUITED FOR..
My discussions with various tradespeople who use these types of drivers (drywallers, metal roofers and cladders) showed a split between those who thought that cordless was the only way to go and others who thought that corded drivers had the power and ease of use to ensure a perfect result every time. Generally speaking, those who worked on drywalling or smaller cladding jobs were cordless oriented, but those who worked on bigger industrial projects preferred corded, their reasons being that most corded drivers were slightly more compact and lighter than cordless.
I guess that time will tell, because at least one major power tool manufacturer has declared that the cordless worksite is the future. Makita also says it is aiming to match the power of the equivalent mains tool with this one. Of course, the new brushless motor and 5Ah Li Ion battery packs are a huge step in the right direction, but in the meantime, we have a choice, so maybe we have the
