Overview
Trend VARIJIG Varijig System Adjustable Frame
Adjustable frame and guide for use with a router
Frame-up: The Trend Varijig is a precision guide system for routing decorative panel mouldings or cutting rectangular recesses for inset fittings. It can also be used for cutting precision grooves and housings for frame or carcass assembly.
Initially intended for routing decorative panel mouldings in door and drawer front panels, the Trend Varijig frame system also allows rectangular recesses and cut-outs to be routed for insetting worktop sinks, hobs and other fittings. The frame system can also be used as a template guide for cutting grooves, slots and cross housings.
Assembly: The Varijig Frame System consists of four 700mm lengths of aluminium extrusion complete with flush fitting corner brackets for assembly as a four-sided frame. Each corner bracket is located using countersunk bolts and T-nuts, allowing the frame to be adjusted to produce a maximum internal working area of 600mm. Alternatively, by slackening off the brackets T-nut bolts, the frame can be adjusted to produce any equal or unequal sided rectangle. For quick setting up, each frame section is fitted with dual metric/imperial scales.
Clamping: Two optional clamping kits are available for securing the frame over the work-piece. These consist of pairs of sliding friction clamps that fit into the underside of the frame extrusion leaving a clear unimpeded path for the router. Two clamp kits are available, the VJS/CK kit that allows for work-piece thicknesses up to 32mm and a long reach kit providing a maximum clamping thickness of 51mm. Each clamp is fitted with soft clamping pads to prevent damage to the underside of the work-piece and an adjustable friction washer to ensure that the frame is held securely during the routing operation.
Alternatively the frame can be held using standard woodworking clamps such as the Trend range of quick action gripper clamps.
Routing the work-piece: In use, the router is guided against the internal edge of the frame by a guide bush (not supplied, minimum 8mm spigot length). The spigot should be fed in a clockwise direction against the inside of the frame with the router base supported on the top face. An anti-tilt shoe is supplied that fits to the base of the router to keep it level during the routing operation. Using a square to initially set the frame corner angles, an accuracy of 0.01mm can be achieved using the Trend Varijig system.
